Ex-reporter Lovinger’s
grammar guide lauded

BASEBALL fans will surely remember home-run hitting Detroit Tigers star Al Kaline. I got an e-mail yesterday which I thought was about his body, until I realized there was no space after the "l" and the e-mail, an ad for Coral Calcium in all capital letters actually read, "Disease can not live in an alkaline body." ... Then there was the Leeward Community College ad that misspelled "education." And now comes an envelope from the U.S. Department of Education in Washington to Star of the Sea School. It stated, "Attention: Principle." Well, principal Carola Souza knows that principles are important, but the spelling of her title can be learned even by children when they're taught the "Principal" is their "Pal." Tell that to Washington ...

PERHAPS the Department of Education could spend a few tax dollars and buy a book on grammar usage by former Star-Bulletin reporter Paul Lovinger, which is being compared to William Strunk Jr. and E.B. White's "Elements of Style" and to H.W. Fowler's "Modern English Usage," the gold standards of the English language and books I wish more TV news writers and readers would use. Lovinger's book is called "The Penguin Dictionary of American English Usage and Style" and that's only half the title -- as a former editor recalls, Lovinger wasn't known for his brevity. Ben Bagdikian, former dean of the graduate school of journalism at the University of California, Berkeley, is quoted on Amazon.com: "What Strunk and White did for writing style, and Fowler for the King's English, Paul W. Lovinger's encyclopedic work "provides the modern guide to sensible and correct usage for every conceivable modern uncertainty." Words, to use an oft-mispronounced one, are his forte ...

Paulo boy

IF you can find a prouder guy around than Rene Paulo, I'd like to meet him. Rene, who played dance music for many years at the old Maile Lounge of the then-Kahala Hilton Hotel, was on hand to cheer when his son, Michael Paulo, won a Hoku Award for best jazz album for his "Sax for Christmas." The event was held Tuesday night at the Sheraton Waikiki's Hawaii Ballroom, and came on the heels of Alana Paulo Tamashiro winning the Miss Teen USA-Hawaii title Sunday night. She's the granddaughter of Rene and wife Akemi. Her mom is Michael's sister, Charlene. All in all, a huge week in the talented Paulo family, and it's only Thursday! ...

Chutzpah Award

WE need to come up with an award for chutzpah to present to former cop Clyde Arakawa, who faces manslaughter charges for smashing into young Dana Ambrose's car, apparently while under the influence of booze, killing her. She would have celebrated her 20th birthday Monday. Arakawa, who retired from the police force and moved to Oregon, then filed suit against the Ambrose family, asking for $13,000 for damage to his '93 Thunderbird. Granted, Arakawa has a right to sue if he thinks he was wronged, but the Kelley Blue Book only lists the value of his car at $3,000. And aside from the fact he seemed unfeeling toward the Ambrose family's loss, didn't the guy even have insurance on his car? In any case, a judge threw out his claim ...
