The Pillsbury Bake-Off has long been the sole province of adult cooks -- and many of their winning recipes have gone on to become convenience classics. Young chefs compete
for Pillsbury prizeThis year, kids get their chance.
Children's versions of the cooking competition have taken place on a regional basis; the Hawaii kids' bake-off has gone on for four years. But this year, the contest goes national, with contestants from 33 states cooking against each other at Sea World in Orlando, Fla.
Hawaii will be represented by 11-year-old Shari Iha of Waiau Elementary, who won the local bake-off with her Taco Crescent Stars.
The bake-off takes place June 18. At stake is a $25,000 grand prize.
The kids' bake-off is for ages 9 to 14. Recipes must make use of at least one Pillsbury product, which covers the spectrum from refrigerated doughs to El Paso salsa and Green Giant canned goods.
Dishes are also supposed to bake up in an hour or less, making them good training material for young cooks.
All 33 finalists' recipes are posted on the Pillsbury Web site, www.kidsbakeoff.com. They will also be published in "Come and Eat," a soft-cover cookbook to be available at supermarket check-outs as well as at Wal-Mart and Kmart stores in August.
