Navy asks Japan's divers to join Ehime Maru work

LOS ANGELES >> The U.S. Navy has asked Japan's Self-Defense Forces to help raise a Japanese fisheries training ship sunk off Hawaii on Feb. 9 by the U.S. submarine Greeneville, Navy sources said yesterday.

The Navy plans to raise the Ehime Maru around the end of this summer from a depth of 2,000 feet to about 90 feet to search for nine Japanese still missing in the accident as well as their belongings, according to the sources.

The sources said the Navy decided to ask Japan to join the salvage effort as its divers would be indispensable in carrying out the operation smoothly.

The Self-Defense Forces are considering the proposal, the sources said.

The Navy is conducting an accelerated environmental assessment of the salvage operation, the sources said.

The Ehime Maru was hit by the Greeneville while the 6,080-ton nuclear sub was conducting a rapid-surfacing drill for the benefit of a VIP civilian group it was carrying.

Of the 35 people aboard the ship, 25 were rescued, but the nine, including four students from Uwajima Fisheries High School in Ehime prefecture, western Japan, were missing and presumed dead.
