UH alum Johnson
earns Triple-A honor

Star-Bulletin staff

Toledo Mud Hens right-hander Mark Johnson, a former University of Hawaii pitcher, earned International League Pitcher-of-the-Week honors after a stellar performance last Thursday against Ottawa.

Johnson, 26, scattered five hits over nine scoreless innings on his way to the second shutout of his five-year professional career. Johnson fanned a season-high five batters during the 3-0 win to even his record at 4-4 and run his scoreless innings streak to 17 2/3.

Johnson leads the Mud Hens with four wins, is tied for first with 53 2/3 innings pitched and is third with 30 strikeouts.

After being selected by Houston in the first round of the 1996 June Draft, Johnson has been traded twice, first to Florida (in a deal for Moises Alou) and then to the Yankees (for Mike Lowell). He was selected by the Tigers in the 1999 Rule 5 Draft and spent last season with the Mud Hens and the parent club, struggling to a 2-12 mark in 26 games.

Hawaii's own

Benny Agbayani, Mets: Batting seventh, the St. Louis and Hawaii Pacific alumnus went 0-for-1 with two walks and an RBI. He also was hit by a pitch.

In the fifth inning, Agbayani came to bat with the bases loaded and was hit by a pitch from Florida reliever Vladimir Nunez, bringing home Mike Piazza and boosting the Mets' lead to 7-2. Nunez was ejected. He had brushed Agbayani back on the previous pitch.

Mike Fetters, Dodgers: The Iolani graduate did not pitch as Los Angeles had the day off.
