Proclamation honors
6th-grade golf sensation

Punahou sixth-grader Michelle Wie visited Gov. Ben Cayetano yesterday -- not on a school trip, but to be honored as one of the state's best golfers.

Sunday, Wie won the Jennie K. Wilson Invitational, Hawaii's most prestigious women's amateur golf tournament.

Wie, who is 11, can hit drives of 270 yards, prompting Cayetano to remark, "She hits the ball 50 yards farther than I do."

Her mother and father accompanied Wie to the gubernatorial proclamation, telling reporters that their daughter practices three or four hours a day, but only after her homework is finished.

"We are very proud of Michelle," her father, B.J. Wie, a University of Hawaii professor, said.

"I used to be a good golfer, but since she started beating me, she doesn't like to play with me anymore," her father joked.

Wie said she hopes to be a professional golfer. Cayetano issued a proclamation honoring Wie and also gave her a golf cap and golf balls.

Roommate finds hidden camera in broken clock

Honolulu police are investigating a possible invasion of privacy case after a 21-year-old Honolulu man discovered a hidden camera in his apartment.

Police said the man moved into a rented room in an apartment on Kapiolani Boulevard a few months ago. He had been suspicious of a broken clock that was on the television set in the living room. When he took the clock apart, he found a miniature camera and power pack inside. His 36-year-old roommate who rented him the room, denied knowing about the camera.

Later, however, the man later located a videotape of himself in the other man's bedroom.

Police have not made any arrests.

Lawsuit alleges institute unfair in fish production

A Big Island producer of Pacific threadfin fish filed suit yesterday against the Oceanic Institute, alleging the nonprofit aquaculture research center has been competing unfairly.

Pacific Harvest Inc. says the institute, with research supported by federal and state grants, has damaged it and other small local producers by selling the fish, also known as moi, below its actual unsubsidized cost, thereby restraining competition.

Pacific Harvest seeks an unspecified amount of damages.

Oceanic's president and chief executive officer, Thomas Farewell, said, "We've heard rumors that a lawsuit was filed, but we have not been served with anything, so we are unaware of what the basis may be."

Farewell said Oceanic provides about 250,000 fingerlings, or baby fish, to Pacific Harvest and other fish farmers per year.

"To date, all the fingerlings provided to farmers have come from the Oceanic Institute," he said.

Corrections and clarifications

>> Lorraine Pescaia's last name was misspelled in a story Sunday about striking Molokai nurses who assisted with accident victims.

>> The two victims from a traffic accident Sunday near Sandy Beach were in separate cars. The cutline for a photograph in Monday's paper incorrectly said the victims were in one car.
