7:30 p.m. today, repeats 9:30 p.m. Sunday, KHET/PBS
Star-Bulletin staff Leo ki'e ki'e, male falsetto singing, will be featured on the latest Hawai'i Public Television's installment of the Hawaiian music series "Na Mele" featuring Richard Ho'opi'i and Led Ka'apana. Both are recognized masters of the style.Ho'opi'i and Ka'apana will be accompanied by steel guitar master Bobby Ingano and Chris Kamaka of Ho'okena.
In the series' trademark of a relaxed gathering of musicians, both of the men sing and play with a buoyant spirit. Ho'opi'i offers a chicken-skin rendition of "My Yellow Ginger Lei" and "Haleakala Hula." Ka'apana also displays his slack-key guitar wizardry on Auntie Alice Namakelua's "Nani."
"Male falsetto singing is unique to Hawai'i and one of the most celebrated things in Hawaiian music," said Ho'opi'i.
