North Carolina school
gets island flavor

WITH college admission acceptance letters arriving daily at the homes of Hawaii's seniors, choices about where to further their education and whether or not to continue playing soccer are made.

Two Star-Bulletin first-team, all-state players have decided to continue playing at NCAA Division II St. Andrew's Presbyterian College in Laurinburg, N.C.

Mililani High School midfielders Jarret Razon and Tim Liu will be joined on the 2001 Knights roster by striker Charlie Chiswick of Castle High School, the Oahu Interscholastic Association East Player of the Year.

They all play for the Mililani Strikers club team and will attend St. Andrew's Presbyterian on combined academic/athletic scholarships.

Razon wanted to go away for college and intends to major in marketing or international business. Liu and Chiswick plan to major in business.

"There were other schools interested, but this was the one I was hoping for," said Chiswick. "They have a real good sports program and it's a small school, only about 700 students."

Kahi Hernandez, a Star-Bulletin first-team all-state defender from Mililani High School, will matriculate at Concordia University in Portland, Ore., where he has an academic/athletic scholarship.

"They have a good business program I want to get into. But, it's school first, then soccer," Hernandez said.

Taryn Jim, who played left outside halfback for Mililani, has been accepted at Iowa State.

She wasn't thinking about continuing her soccer career until she broke her left arm in a game this past season and missed the state tournament. Jim now plans to walk-on at ISU and hopes to make the team.

Jennifer Iha, a midfielder from Mililani, picked Sacramento State over Northwest Missouri State. She'll get a partial scholarship.

"I didn't want to stay in Hawaii and I have a lot of relatives in California, so it's kind of like going away," Iha said.

The Leahi Women's Team brought home Hawaii's second championship from the Friendship Cup In Las Vegas.

Leahi competed in the B Division and finished undefeated while playing six, 50-minute matches in two days and outscoring the competition, 20-1.

Teams members are Kammie Aguada, Nicki Arakawa, Teresa Bennett, Gail Chang, Carol Hatcher, Mia Karamatsu, Tui Moe, Julie Moix, Missy Moore, Kari Morioka, Tricia Nishikawa, Myrissa Olanda, Tara Palama, Julie Seitz, Sandy Shimogaki, Shellie Silva and guest player Isabelle Harvey.
