1973: Do you know
the way to San Jose
—I mean Canlis

THE WEEK THAT WAS

THE waitresses at Canlis' were so excited when they heard who their late-night visitor was going to be that they all volunteered to stay late And at about midnight, the party of Burt Bacharach -- some 24 strong -- showed up for a late meal to celebrate their successful three-week tour of Australia. Burt's wife, Angie Dickenson, was on hand, too, of course, which must have made manager Dave Hill happy. Wine lovers will be appalled to hear, however, that both Burt and Angie put ice cubes in their vino, which is akin to putting ketchup on cottage cheese. (May 23, 1973) ...

WHEN Carl Hebenstreit (known to oldtimers for his Kini Popo image on Isle TV) became creative director for Trade Publishing, news of the appointment appeared in the company's Equipment bulletin, along with a photo -- of Hebenstreit's nose! (May 26, 1976) ... You hear a lot of stories about lava rocks being returned to the volcano on the Big Isle, but my favorite arrived at the Volcano House the other day: "Dear Pele," it began. "I'm a very scientific electronics technician and not subject to superstitious bunk, so I took a few rocks a souvenirs in the summer of '78. Since then I've had fires of my tractor, two cars and my house caught fire twice. I'm still scientific, but I can take a hint. Please toss these back in the volcano before someone gets killed around here," (May 25, 1980) ...

KAUAI resident Nadine Rosenberger strolled into the new keno lounge in the Las Vegas Hilton last week, bought a $3 keno ticket, got instructions from a fellow in the lounge on how to fill it out -- it was her first try at keno -- and promptly walked away with $50,000. Her husband, George, owns the Kauai Chemical Co. and was attending a Shriners convention in Vegas. Said Nadine, "I don't think I will play again. I'm not a gambler. But I like blackjack a lot." (May 26, 1982)... Vivian Wu, who was featured in "The Last Emperor," has finished her spring semester at Hawaii Pacific College and is off to play leading roles in films in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan. (May 22, 1989) ...

YOU know all about the Doublemint Twins and Certs -- two mints in one? Well, in the Hanakahi household in Wahiawa, it's "Three's Company." It all began on Oct. 4, 1972, when the triplets, Alana, Alexa and Alicia Hanakahi were born. Now their dreams have come true, as all three collected their bachelor of arts degrees from the University of Hawaii at Manoa on the same day. Just to show the girls are not exactly alike, Alana and Alexa have their degrees in English, while Alicia opted for history. (May 21, 1996) ...

NOBODY is likely to file false advertising claims against Mike Sinclair of Perfect Bodies. He's the guy who for the past several years has been working on perfecting the body of Brook Mahealani Lee. They worked together through lots of competitions leading up to her crowning as Miss Universe last week. It may not be totally perfect, but close enough. (May 21. 1997) ...
