Question: What ever happened to the two residential properties that the state purchased for the Kalanianaole Highway widening project? Homes seized for
highway widening maybe
auctioned off soonAnswer: The state Department of Transportation purchased a two-story, three-bedroom home at 5839 Kalanianaole Hwy. and a one-story, three-bedroom home 5841 Kalanianaole Hwy. because the widened highway cut into the properties.
"We only used a few feet but that made the homes uninhabitable," said Marilyn Kali, DOT spokeswoman.
The homes have been unoccupied since the state started the widening project in 1995 and have fallen into disrepair. Both were built in 1960.
The state DOT recently had the properties appraised and plans to ask the state Land Board in June for permission to sell them at auction.
Both properties are makai of the highway near the intersection with Paiko Drive.
The property at 5839 Kalanianaole Hwy. occupies 5,382 square feet. The city assessed the land value for tax purposes at $132,300, and $27,200 for the structure and other improvements.
The property at 5841 Kalanianaole Hwy. occupies 5,445 square feet. The latest city assessment is $132,800 for the land and $24,000 for the improvements.
