Kaffka finishes sixth
in WAC heptathlon

FRESNO, Calif. >> Nicole Kaffka of the University of Hawaii placed sixth in the heptathlon yesterday at the Western Athletic Conference track and field championships.

Kaffka, competing in her first heptathlon and the first ever for UH, scored 4,281 points. The sophomore fell off from fourth place after the first day.

Keitha Moseley of Rice successfully defended her WAC title, finishing with 4,862 points.

UH coach Carmyn James was pleased with Kaffka's performance. The sophomore long-jumped 5.24 meters, threw the javelin 24.38 meters and ran the 800 meters in 2 minutes, 33.55 seconds yesterday -- all personal bests.

"I was happy to see her ability to stay focused on one event at a time," James said.

UH golfer in 24th after regional first round

CORVALIS, Ore. >> University of Hawaii golfer Scott Carlyle was tied for 24th place going into today's second round of the NCAA West Regional golf tournament. Carlyle, the only Rainbow golfer in the event, shot an even-par 72.

The 54-hole tourney concludes tomorrow.

Komine strikes out 12 in win over Oklahoma State

All-American Shane Komine struck out 12 over eight innings, allowing one run on six hits, as top-seeded Nebraska defeated Oklahoma State in a Big 12 Baseball Tournament game in Oklahoma City, Okla.

The Kalani High graduate improved his record to 12-1.

Farrington wins JV girls basketball title in OIA

The Farrington junior varsity girls' basketball team won the Oahu Interscholastic Association title Wednesday, defeating Kaimuki, 57-41, at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Governors finished 21-0 overall.

Special deals for state baseball tournament fans

All youth league baseball and softball players in uniform (6th grade and below) will be admitted free to the state baseball tournament games today and tomorrow at Aloha Stadium.

For tonight's games at Hans L'Orange Park, free parking is available at the Waikele Shopping Center's employee parking lot on Koaki Street. A free shuttle will provide rides to and from the ballpark.

Benny Agbayani, Mets: The St. Louis and Hawaii Pacific alumnus is recovering from a lower abdomen strain and is day-to-day.

Mike Fetters, Dodgers: The Iolani graduate did not pitch in Los Angeles' 3-1 loss to Montreal.
