>> Braxton Sato, now in fifth grade at Parker Elementary, who recently invented a hat with a radio powered by solar energy. It "will encourage the wearer to keep it on, and protect him or her from UV rays," says Braxton. These are just three of the more than 3,500 entrants in this year's "Invention Convention," sponsored by Hawaiian Electric with the Department of Education.>> Joel Nagamine, a third grader at Hokulani School, who invented a watering table that sits over potted plants and somehow waters 10 potted plants with a single pour. "It also helps save water," said Joel.
>> Kristie Musick, fifth grader at Kahuku Elementary, who devised "Super Handles," which are tennis racket handles made of gel or foam. "Soft on the hands yet strong when properly gripped."
Forty-five finalists will be on display tomorrow and Sunday at Kahala Mall during mall hours. The students are all from kindergarten to eighth grade.
Each entrant had to prepare a logbook describing their invention, explain how it would be made, how much it would cost and how it would be sold.
The contest is sponsored annually by Hawaiian Electric Co.
