Cleaning sweep
for Young

During the filming of "Pearl Harbor," the local business tasked with cleaning the costumes of a cast of 1,800 stars and extras was Young Laundry & Dry Cleaning.

The job -- to sanitize the costumes, but not to get them too clean.

Owner and President Mike Drace said that was the first time he'd ever had such a request.

He said that filming scenes such as the bombing, "took place over a couple days. They needed the garments, for continuity on the screen, to be clean but not too clean." The stains and discoloration needed to be in the same spots.

The company had some in-house expertise in dealing with the no-longer-common types of fabrics used in the 1940s, and with the proper pressing of different military uniforms from the era.

At least three employees on staff during filming had first-hand expertise in the proper pressing of uniforms of the time. Of the three, Drace said the one who has not yet retired "owned his own (dry cleaning) shop on King street and watched the bombing from his shop that day."

Some present

An unfortunate bit of juxtaposition and timing Wednesday night. At the end of a spot break during The West Wing season finale, KHNL News 8 anchor Jodi Leong read a brief set of headlines for the upcoming 10 p.m. newscast.

The last of them was, "And a massive gift for the U.S.S. Arizona from the producers of the new 'Pearl Harbor' movie." The video shown as she read was a movie clip -- an aerial view of a bomb hurtling toward the deck of a ship.

As stated on the subsequent newscast, the gift is a donation of some movie proceeds toward expansion of the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial visitor center.

In addition, the script from the news story as posted on www.khnl.com read, "In conjunction with this new movie, Fox Entertainment is re-releasing Toro Toro Toro (sic) on VHS and DVD."

News 8 morning show producer Andrew Pereira confirmed that despite the Web site typo, reporter Marvin Buenconsejo pronounced the movie's title correctly, as "Tora Tora Tora" on the air.
