Rainbows open 2002
season at home
against Seminoles

By Al Chase

The next University of Hawaii head baseball coach will face a stern test the opening weekend of the 2002 season, when the Rainbows host long-time, national powerhouse Florida State for four games.

Other nonconference opponents include Sacramento State, UCLA (for the eighth consecutive season), former Western Athletic Conference rival Brigham Young and UC Irvine, which reinstated its baseball program this season.

The Rainbows open Western Athletic Conference play March 8-10 against Rice. When they travel to play new WAC member Louisiana Tech on April 12-14, it will be the furthest east the Rainbows have played.

The 27th Rainbow Easter Tournament will have some familiar teams in Hawaii-Hilo, Hawaii Pacific, Lewis-Clark State and San Jose State. The Spartans will stay here after playing the 'Bows in a WAC series the weekend prior to the tournament.

Also in the tournament are UC Riverside of the Big West Conference and Birmingham Southern College, an NAIA school from Alabama.

Hawaii's final nine games are on the road -- three at San Jose State, three at UH-Hilo and three at Fresno State.
