Hawaii Pacific senior second baseman Samee Fernandez and University of Hawaii-Hilo junior pitcher Taysha Anderson were named to the NCAA Division II West Region second team for softball yesterday.

Fernandez, the Sea Warriors' co-captain from Kaneohe, led the PacWest Pacific Division in walks (16) and sacrifice bunts (15). She also committed just one error in 258 chances this season (.996 fielding percentage, and just two errors in 466 chances over the past two years.

Anderson, from Central Point, Ore., finished the season with a 13-4 record and 1.42 ERA. She started the season 3-4, but won her last 10 starts. 

Yamauchi brothers earn gold medals in lifting

Brothers Kyle and Bryce Yamauchi, both students at Punahou School, each won a gold medal at their respective weightlifing competitions.

Kyle Yamauchi, a senior, had a lift total of 451 pounds to win gold at the Junior Pan American Championships held in Mexico City this past weekend.

Bryce Yamauchi, a sophomore, earned his gold medal last week at an international competition in Canada.

5 Hawaii surfers advance at Billabong Pro meet

Led by defending world champion Sunny Garcia, all five Hawaii surfers won their respective heats to advance to the fourth round of the Billabong Pro at Teahupoo, Tahiti.

Hawaii's Shane Dorian tied for the highest score of the day, finishing with a 25.5 in eliminating Australia's Kieren Perrow. In one of the closest heats of the day, Hawaii's Bruce Irons edged Australia's Luke Egan, 20.5-20.4.

Other Hawaii surfers advancing were Kalani Robb and Andy Irons.
