Boomerangs, with its log-cabin interior, boomerang-shaped counter, boomerangs set into the floor and real ostrich egg light fixtures set in wagon-wheels suspended from the ceiling, will be a restaurant, as may have suspected. Revealing
a mystery
at the RowThe glass storefront of the former Burger King in Restaurant Row was festooned since early March with a banner indicating that Boomerangs is "coming soon." In the last few days the glass made way for plyboard panels with no banner.
According to owner and President Tim Dare, its main specialty items will be "genuine Maryland crab cakes," he said, and barbecue ribs.
As neither of the specialty foods, nor the homemade manicotti, choice of calamari-, hamburger-, eggplant- or chicken parmesan, or barbecue ribs or chicken seems inherently Australian, TheBuzz had to ask, "Why Boomerangs?"
"Because I want people coming back," he said.
"All regular menu items will be under $10," he said, with combination items running slightly higher, but it'll be "strictly carry-out, no waiters or waitresses," to help keep his overhead low.
Originally from Maryland, and a graduate of the Baltimore International Culinary Art Institute, Dare said "we're religious about our crab cakes," and said he's not found anything on Oahu he believes to be genuine. Dare will import blue crab from the East Coast for his crab cakes and his "huge" crab cake sandwich at $8.95.
He hopes to open for business June 15, and plans a month-long grand opening promotion and enter-to-win contest to give away a brand new $23,000 Harley-Davidson Road King.
While planning for the opening of his restaurant, he's also been planning his wedding to the soon-to-be Mrs. Amy Dare this Saturday.
Many long-time Honolulu residents will remember Tim's dad "Howie," the FBI special agent and news media liaison who served a six-year stint in Honolulu in the 1980s.
He's coming in for the wedding from Huntington Beach, Calif., this week.
