Three undefeated
in 2nd day of summer
sumo tourney

TOKYO, May 14 (Kyodo) -- Ozeki Kaio maintained the momentum in his bid to join sumo's ultimate rank of yokozuna with another comfortable win Monday on the second day of the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament.

Yokozuna pair Takanohana and Musashimaru also recorded easy victories to ensure the ozeki does not have it all his own way at the 15-day tournament at Tokyo's Ryogoku Kokugikan.

A back injury has limited Kaio's build-up for the Emperor's Cup but he showed little signs of pain against Takanowaka (0-2), quickly driving the top-ranked maegashira out of the ring.

Meanwhile, Asashoryu was the most popular winner of the day, putting on an impressive show in front of his parents, who had traveled over from Mongolia to watch the newly-promoted komusubi.

The Mongolian trickster, on a high following Sunday's surprise win over Musashimaru, upset Musoyama and sent the ozeki to his second loss. Asashoryu will have another chance to display his skills against top-ranked wrestlers as he is up against Takanohana next.

Takanohana, looking to lift his 22nd Emperor's Cup, gave another show of his immense strength and never looked troubled in forcing out third-ranked maegashira Tamanoshima (0-2) to keep up the pace at 2-0.

Musashimaru, who had been downed by Chiyotenzan in their last two meetings, bounced back from his upset loss on Monday and was in command from the start, eventually throwing the second-ranked maegashira down to the dirt surface.

Komusubi Kotomitsuki (1-1) warmed up for his appointment with defending summer champion Kaio on Tuesday by seeing off ozeki Miyabiyama (1-1), turning the Musashigawa stable grappler around and then shunting him out of the dohyo.

Ozeki duo Chiyotaikai (2-0) and Dejima (1-1) fared better, both recording convincing wins against sekiwake Tochiazuma and third-ranked Tosanoumi, who both slipped to their first losses.

No. 15 maegashira Kyokushuzan ousted 13th-ranked Toki (1-1) to move to 2-0 and seventh-ranked Kyokutenho (1-1) handed No. 6 maegashira Tokitsuumi his second loss, making it a perfect day for the Mongolian trio in the top division.

In a battle of the two lightest fighters in the makuuchi division, 10th-ranked maegashira Aminishiki (2-0) quickly got the better of 38-year-old Terao (1-1) and shunted him backwards out of the ring.
