From staff and wire reports

HILO >> The University of Hawaii collected a season-high 21 hits to saddle Hawaii-Hilo with their 16th consecutive defeat yesterday at Francis Wong Stadium.

The 15-4 Western Athletic Conference victory also saw the Rainbows record a season high for runs scored.

UH designated hitter Gregg Omori had his second consecutive big game against the Vulcans, going 3-for-4, including a grand slam, with five runs batted in. He has nine RBIs in the first two games of the three-game series.

Rainbow third baseman Patrick Scalabrini was 5-for-6 with three runs scored and an RBI. Right-hander Chad Giannetti pitched seven innings to earn the win and even his record at 5-5.

The Rainbows (25-27, 12-20 WAC) grabbed a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning when the first five batters reached base safely.

Matt Purtell started the game with a single to center field and moved to third on Lane Nogawa's double to right-center field. Omori's single scored Purtell and moved Nogawa to third. Scalabrini's single to center scored Nogawa, who had three hits.

Omori took third on Danny Kimura's single to left and scored on a wild pitch.

Hawaii added three more runs in the fifth on Kimura's RBI single and a two-run single to left by Brian Bock.

Both teams batted around in the sixth inning. First the Rainbows scored five runs, four scoring on Omori's grand slam, to take an 11-0 lead.

UH starter Chad Giannetti ran into some trouble in the bottom of the sixth, giving up four runs.

UH-Hilo is 5-41, 3-29 WAC.
