Kalani no problem
for Aiea

For the third year in a row, Aiea High and Kalani High met in the first round of the Oahu Interscholastic Association playoffs.

But unlike past years, this time it wasn't even close as Na Alii cruised to a 57-28 victory..

In 1999, Aiea needed a last second shot by Kylee Nakamura to advance. Last year, the Falcons kept the game close but Aiea pulled out the win

Na Alii put their height advantage to use with a dominant inside game and controlled the boards.

Aritta Lane poured in 32 points and grabbed 20 of Aiea's 43 rebounds, many on the offensive end.

Kalani didn't get many second chances as Aiea outrebounded the Falcons and clogged up the post.

"We did pretty much what we wanted to do," Aiea coach Fran Villarmia-Kahawai said. "We had a lot of energy. I thought we executed our game plan pretty good. The girls were talking amongst themselves saying, "Let's not make it close."

It never was close as Na Alii jumped out to a 14-6 lead at the end of the first quarter and held a commanding 34-16 lead at the half.

Aiea never trailed and held Kalani scoreless in the opening minutes of the second quarter before going on a 13-7 run.

The scoring continued into the third quarter with Aiea adding eight more points while limiting Kalani to four.

For Na Alii, it was a comfort to hold a huge advantage entering the fourth period.

"It was very relieving," Lane said. "It didn't bring so much pressure toward the second half. We took our time."

Besides working its game plan, Aiea also effectively contained high-scorer Ashley Takata, limiting the junior to just seven points after her recent string of 20-plus performances.

"We ran out of gas," Kalani coach Mike Zane said. "It was just a mismatch underneath the boards. They just took care of their business underneath."
