Waiakea, Kauai
win golf titles

The Warrior boys become
the first team to win
four straight

KAANAPALI >> The first win was as sweet as the fourth.

Rookie Kauai High girls golf coach Kellie Pleas was all smiles after leading her team to its first title in yesterday's 2001 David S. Ishii/HHSAA State Golf Championship played at the Kaanapali South Course.

So was Waiakea boys head coach Lee Hardy after his team won an unprecedented fourth straight state title. Both coaches claimed it was a team effort, but they had help from two key individuals.

Kauai's Rachel Kyono -- who is bound for Pepperdine in the fall on a golf scholarship -- won the individual championship in a walk. Her 36-hole total of 143 (1 over par) was eight shots better than Waiakea's Leah Whiting, who helped her team finish second overall.

Jarett Hamamoto had to work a little harder to win the individual boys title. He fired a 36-hole total of 141 (1 over par) on the Kapalua Village course to edge teammate Gabriel Wilson by two shots. It was the second consecutive runner-up finish for Wilson, who is only a sophomore.

"How many times do you successfully defend a runnerup title?" Hardy asked. "But that's what you need to win a championship. This is a team win. We had the bull's-eye on our backs. We knew it was going to be difficult to win four in a row. It's much harder to defend when you know everybody's gunning for you. I'm proud of these guys for the way they played under extreme pressure."

The Big Island boys finished with a solid team score of 598. Leilehua was second at 615 to ease past Lahainaluna, which finished third at 617. Leilehua golf coach Hubert Minn was happy with the finish, even though the Mules were 17 shots off the pace.

"When we won the OIA title, hardly anybody mentioned it," Minn said. "It upset my kids a little. It also motivated them to come over here and play as well as they did. Finishing second was very big for our school, because Waiakea is clearly the best in the state."

Leilehua's Nick Mason finished third in the individual championship with a 145. After opening with a so-so 76 in the morning, Mason came back with a 69 in the afternoon to tie Hamamoto for the best round. Hamamoto shot his 69 in the morning to lead the field after 18 holes.

"I knew I was the leader, but I didn't put any extra pressure on myself," Hamamoto said. "I just didn't want to go out and post a big number in the afternoon. First of all, I wanted to win as a team. We all did. Taking the individual title makes it even better."

Kyono felt the same way. She opened with a 72 to tie with Waiakea's Kira-Ann Murishige, who struggled to an 80 in the windy afternoon round. In Kyono's mind, if she stayed as focused in the afternoon as in the morning, she would be fine.

FL MORRIS / STAR-BULLETIN
Rachel Kyono lined up and made a birdie putt on the 14th hole
during the David S. Ishii Foundation Girls State Golf Championship
at Maui's Kaanapali South Course yesterday. Kyono went
on to win the girls individual title.

"This is a great way for me to go out," the Kauai senior said. "For us to also take the team championship is great. I came out and hit the ball well on the driving range. I also putted well, so I felt good. I never imagined winning by eight strokes."

Her stellar performance helped Kauai overcome the two-three individual finish by Waiakea. Kauai came in with a 457. Waiakea was second at 468 and Punahou was third at 495.

"This is a wonderful experience for all of us," Pleas said. "I helped the team last year as an assistant. This is my first year as the head coach and I can't imagine anything better than this.

"Rachel played well for us. I had a talk with some of our other girls after the morning round. We worked on the range to straighten some things out. And that made a difference in the afternoon. This is a team game. But thank goodness for Rachel, she was special today."

So were the Waiakea boys. Other coaches were coming up and congratulating Hardy long before the final scores were tallied. Everyone knew Waiakea had done something special.

"We left two of our seniors (Laine Malson and Chase Augustin) off because some of our underclassmen were playing better," Hardy said. "One was our captain, who was willing to sacrifice for the good of our team.

Without these gentlemen's kindness, we might not be standing here right now.

"I'm really moved. Of all the tournaments, this is the hardest one to give an interview. We're going to go home and feel good about this for a long time. I know some coaches think we have a golf factory, but you still have to go out and perform on the course."
