Kalani clinches playoff spot

Ashley Takata scored 27 points last night -- an off-night by her recent standards -- as Kalani High overcame a slow start to beat Kaimuki 63-38.

The junior guard has been racking up huge numbers for the Falcons, including back-to-back games with more than 30 points (32 versus Kailua and 38 against Farrington).

"It felt like any other night," Takata said. "We just played our game. We did fine. I was just shooting. It was just falling in and I was thankful for that."

What might have been the story of one of the best scorers not to make the playoffs has been rewritten, as the Falcons clinched the East's fourth spot in the Oahu Interscholastic Association playoffs.

As Kalani coach Mike Zane predicted before the game, the Falcons needed a win and some luck to reach the playoffs. And they got just that when Castle upset McKinley.

Zane said Kalani struggled against a Kaimuki team that has only won two games.

"We played real sloppy," Zane said. "We weren't playing the way we wanted to play. We didn't push the ball real well. We were taking shots when we didn't want to be taking shots."

It explains why the Falcons missed their first six shots and trailed 13-10 after one quarter.

Kaimuki's Chyenna Souza had 12 of her 22 points, including two 3-pointers, in the first half to keep the game close.

And Souza helped hold Takata to 10 points in the first half.

But with 12 points in the fourth quarter, including six free throws, Takata found her rhythm again.

She even had a Kaimuki assistant coach screaming to his players "Don't let 21 (Takata) touch the ball."

Takata's response?

"When I hear that, I try to just make my way through," Takata said. "I cut as fast as I can."
