UH beats Hawaii-Hilo in the
first game of the intra-state
WAC seriesFrom staff and wire reports
Hawaii (24-27 overall, 11-20 WAC) and Hawaii-Hilo (5-40, 3-28) meet again today at 4 p.m. The teams conclude the series tomorrow at 1 p.m.
Trailing 4-3 after seven, Hawaii rallied for the second time in the game. Omori's homer over the left-field fence was his 10th of the season.
The Rainbows added an insurance run in the ninth when Matt Purtell was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, forcing in Brian Bock.
UH starter Jeff Coleman, with 1-2-3 relief help from Bryan Lee in the ninth, won his seventh game of the season. It was Lee's sixth save.
Vulcan Zeb Watts, a junior right-hander, baffled the Rainbows for the first five innings, allowing just two base runners.
The Vulcans scored first in the fourth inning. Keola Park reached on a single to deep short and moved to second on a passed ball. He scored easily when Nalei Sooto ripped a 1-1 pitch off the right-center field fence for a double.
The Rainbows finally began to solve Watts' offerings in the sixth inning. Art Guillen and Matt Purtell laid down bunt singles with one out. Guillen continued to second on a throwing error by Hilo catcher Todd Jinbo and took third on Purtell's hit.
With Purtell running, Omori drilled a pitch past third base into the left-field corner for a two-run double. Patrick Scalabrini followed with a single to center that scored Omori for a 3-1 Rainbow lead.
Kaliko Oligo opened the Vulcan sixth with a single to center. One out later, Park homered well over the right-field fence.
The Vulcans then took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the seventh. Jinbo singled, took second on Darren Chu's sacrifice bunt, third on a groundout and scored on Mike Hobbs' single to right.
