Aiea clinches OIA West

By Jason Kaneshiro
Star-Bulletin

Individually, Aiea's Aritta Lane and Keesha Aldridge can dominate a basketball game. Together, they are nearly unstoppable.

Na Alii's twin towers stood tall once again last night as they led Aiea to a 50-24 win over Radford to clinch the Oahu Interscholastic Association West Division girls' basketball title.

Aiea (8-0) aims to complete an undefeated regular season tonight against Mililani at the Trojans' gym, with an eye on the league playoffs, which open tomorrow with do-or-die quarterfinal games.

Lane and Aldridge combined to score 26 points on 12-for-16 shooting in just three quarters of action last night. The seniors, who are playing their third season together, also dominated the boards and found each other for several nifty assists.

The duo's dominance helped Aiea build a 26-10 first-half lead and allowed Aiea coach Fran Villarmia-Kahawai to keep her starters on the bench for much of the second half.

"It was good we got to rest a lot of the starters early," Villarmia-Kahawai said. "We want to do the same thing, if we can, (tonight) to get ready for Saturday, because that's the game you have to win."
