FARRINGTON HIGH SCHOOL'S newspaper, the Governor, was named overall state winner for its consistent high quality of work at the 32nd annual State High School Journalism Awards last night.

The paper also won the honor in 1998 and 1999.

"All those late nights staying at school are finally paying off," said Cherry Cachero, co-editor of the Governor. "My whole staff has been outstanding. We've always tried to strive for the best, and this honor is going to blow everybody away."

The Governor also beat other high school newspapers in the "layout/design" and "photography/illustration" categories.

Sacred Hearts Academy's Ka Leo, which was last year's overall state winner, placed first in the "outstanding news writing" and "sports writing" categories for the state this year.

The Hawaii Publishers Association, the Honolulu Star-Bulletin and the Honolulu Advertiser sponsored the awards dinner at the Pagoda Hotel last night.

The association acknowledged winners from public and private high schools in six categories: editorial writing, feature writing, layout/design, news writing, photography/illustration and sports writing.

Cachero said there was never a rivalry with Sacred Hearts, but she took a look at last year's winning paper to see "what made them winners."

Michael Maurice, the Governor's co-editor in chief, said, "We did a good job at covering a lot of the interests of our student body -- not just looking at the mainstream, but having a well-rounded coverage of stories and ideas."

The winning staffers are diverse in personalities and interests, but, Maurice said, they formed a cohesive unit.

"They take great pride in their work," said Farrington's adviser, Ellen Manago.

Manago said she tries to keep the newspaper student-directed as much as possible. She said it is often difficult to get students to sign up for news writing.

"It's the smallest staff I've ever had," Manago said, with 18 staffers the first semester and 16 the second. This year, however, more seniors are thinking of going into journalism than in past years, she said.

Maurice said, however, he will probably pursue a career in computer science because he does not think he can handle deadlines and the hectic life of a daily newspaper.

Layout is really a big part of a newspaper, Maurice said.

"We try to go for readability, making it easy to navigate through the paper, making it interesting and attractive, which draws a greater part of the student body readership."

Kauai District did not have a district winner because Kapaa High School was the only school to enter the competition.
