WAIMEA, Hawaii >> James Onaga allowed one run in five innings as St. Joseph defeated Hawaii Preparatory Academy 2-1, in a Big Island Interscholastic Federation game yesterday.

The Cardinals clinched a spot in the playoff game on Monday to determine one of the BIIF's two state berths.

Waiakea needs to win one of two remaining games to repeat as BIIF champion and earn a state berth. Hilo and Konawaena (both 5-2) also remain in contention for a state tournament appearance.

Wildcats 14, Cowboys 6: In another BIIF game at Waimea, Konawaena beat Kohala, 14-6. Cody Maeda drove in four runs and James McGowan brought in three to lead the Wildcats.
