to beat Menehunes
Star-BulletinIn a low-scoring game against visiting Moanalua, the Governors took their time on offense and defense to defeat the Menehunes, 30-26 in overtime. The Govs improve to 7-1 and maintain their second-place spot in the OIA East behind Kalaheo (8-0).
"It was a well-played game by both teams," Farrington coach Jenic Tumaneng said. "Both teams were real patient on their offense. Our big girl ( 6-4 Tina Sanerivi) made some key rebounds when we needed it."
Farrington held Moanalua (4-4) to three points in the last 12 minutes of play, with just one coming in overtime. The Govs didn't allow many second chances with Sanerivi dominating the boards.
Moanalua coach Roy Dias said fatigue was a factor. The Menehunes were playing their fourth game in seven days after returning from the teachers' strike.
Dias also said that all teams face the same brutal schedule. The difference he believes wasn't in the defense but the offense.
"They hit their shots and we didn't hit ours, that's what it came down to," Dias said.
Moanalua's Amy Kotani led all scorers with 10 points, while Farrington had a balanced attack, getting six points each from Cheryln Ligot and Sanerivi.
Moanalua appeared to take control in the third, going ahead 24-20. But Farrington battled back in the fourth with Revelin Cabaya's 3-pointer giving the Govs a 25-24 lead with five minutes left in regulation.
Samantha Davis hit a free throw with 4:10 left to tie it and the teams remained deadlocked, forcing overtime.
