Kahuku’s Casey signs
to play basketball for BYUH

Kahuku High School's Micah Casey has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Brigham Young University-Hawaii next season.

"He is an extremely good rebounder, runs the court really well and has good hands,'' said Seasider head coach Ken Wagner. "He improved a lot between his junior and senior years of high school and we expect the same kind of improvement between high school and college."

Casey averaged 16 points, 10 rebounds and nearly 3 blocked shots a game for the Red Raiders.

"Casey put up some nice numbers for Kahuku during his senior year,'' said Red Raiders basketball coach Nathan James.

Honors for Komine

Hawaii's Shane Komine, an all-American pitcher for Nebraska, yesterday was named to the all-Big 12 academic first team.

The Kalani High graduate is a junior sociology major with a grade-point average of better than a 3.2. Komine, the Cornhuskers' all-time strikeout leader, was one of 16 players named.

Kukea Race on Sunday

The 6th Kala Kukea Ironman Challenge, sponsored by Hui Nalu Canoe Club, is scheduled for Sunday at Maunalua Bay.

The event, dedicated to the late waterman and Hui Nalu member, features competition in one- and six-man canoes and surfskis.

The fee is $10 for age-group paddlers and $15 for open-class paddlers, and allows paddlers to compete in more than one event.

The short-course race is a quarter-mile long with racing beginning at 8:15 a.m. The long-course race is approximately five miles from Maunalua Bay to Wailupe and back.

Registration is from noon-3 p.m. Saturday and 6:30-9:30 a.m. Sunday.

Armed Forces volleyball

Men's and women's teams from the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps will compete in the Armed Forces Volleyball Championships Friday through next Tuesday at the Fort Shafter Physical Fitness Center.

Opening ceremonies are at 7:30 a.m. Friday.

Tinman deadline nears

The last day to register for the July 15 Tinman Triathlon is May 21.

The popular event includes an 800-meter swim off Ala Moana Beach Park, a 40-kilometer bike to Kapiolani Park, and 10-kilometer run to through Kahala to the Kapiolani Park finish.

The entry fee is $55. Late registration will be $65.

Track club opens practice

The Hawaii Kai Track Club will hold registration and its first day of practice next Tuesday at the Kaiser High track.

Among the coaches will be Kaiser coach Steve Jacobson, and St. Andrew's Dennis Swart. Also helping out will be former Punahou standout Victoria Chang, who was named Pac-10 Freshman of the Year for cross country in her first season at Stanford.

Practices are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:45-6:15 p.m. Meets begin in June.

The club is open to all athletes born between 1983 and 1992.
