Hawaii's Bruce Irons won yesterday's Von Zipper Hinano Trials at Teahupoo, Tahiti, securing a wildcard spot into the Billabong Pro, which is scheduled to begin today.

Hawaii's Tamayo Perry placed third in the final, just missing out on a wildcard spot.

The Billabong Pro is the second Association of Surfing Professionals World Championship Tour event of the year.

No state record for Kai

Natasha Kai has broken numerous track records during her four-year career at Kahuku High School. But it was the record that she didn't break that's creating a stir.

At last Saturday's Oahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division Championship, Kai jumped 19 feet, 8 inches, and broke the state long jump record. Or so it was believed.

OIA track and field coordinator Rodney Iwasaki discovered that officials incorrectly measured the girls long jump and inadvertently added an additional 12 inches to each girl's jump. Measurements should be taken from the front of the board, but it had been done from the back.

"Natasha had mentioned something to me but I couldn't find the official to find out if that was what happened," Kahuku track coach Garth Spurrier said. "She thought that they were measuring from the back of the board."

Kai's actual jump is 18-8, a new Eastern division meet record that broke her previous division mark of 17-912 inches.

Porter cited by WAC

University of Hawaii first baseman Stacey Porter was named softball Player of the Week by the Western Athletic Conference.

The freshman from New South Wales, Australia, batted .455, driving in four runs on a double and two home runs to lead the Wahine to a 4-0 record last week.

Yamauchi takes gold

Hawaii's Bryce Yamauchi won the gold medal in the 123-pound weight class at the Young Louis Cyr Tournament in Brossard, Quebec, on Saturday.

Yamauchi, a sophomore at Punahou, lifted a total of 402 pounds -- 182 pounds in the snatch and 220 pounds in the clean and jerk.

The competition involved weightlifters from the U.S. and Canada for ages 16-and-under.
