Apelu, Yasui win
OIA golf titles

Radford's Angela Apelu shot a 72 yesterday at Kalakaua Golf Course to win the Oahu Interscholastic Association girls' golf championship.

Apelu, a junior, finished third at last year's individual championships.

"It was mostly my driver," Apelu said. "I got in the fairway a lot, so it was easy to get it on the green or close."

Apelu and the other 17 top scorers in the tournament qualified for next week's state championships on Maui.

"I was a little shaky at first," Apelu said. "But winning today makes me ready for states. I'm ready to go."

Junior Grant Yasui of Pearl City shot a 71 to claim the boys' OIA crown. Yasui attributes his success to off-course preparation.

"I was running and lifting every other day," Yasui said. "I thought I worked hard enough, but I didn't expect it."

Earl Medeiros of Waianae finished two strokes back, with Josh Chin of Aiea three back.
