[ RAINBOW BASEBALL ]
RENO, Nevada >> The University of Hawaii baseball team fell behind early and failed to create a big-run inning yesterday in the finale of a three-game Western Athletic Conference series. Bows swept by
Wolf PackStaff and wire services
For the third consecutive game, the University of Nevada Wolf Pack received a strong pitching performance from an underclassman. Freshman right-hander Clint Kofachl held the Rainbows to single runs in five different innings. He scattered 10 hits, struck out seven and walked one.
UH starter Sean Yamashita ran into trouble in the odd innings, giving up a run in the first, three in the third and two in the fifth as the Wolf Pack (29-23, 17-16 WAC) built a 6-3 lead.
The 8-5 victory gave Nevada a sweep of this series and a 4-2 mark in the season series.
Hawaii tied the score at 1-1 in the top of the second inning when Chad Boudon doubled to center field and eventually scored on Cortland Wilson's sacrifice fly. The Rainbows (23-27, 10-20) took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third on Gregg Omori's RBI single.
But, after retiring the side in order in the bottom of the second, Yamashita gave up a leadoff single to Michael Hass, a one-out single to Bo Bryant and a two-run double to Mike Gillies to start the third inning. Gillies took third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by JaRell McIntyre.
Singles by Brian Bock, Tim Montgomery and Matt Purtell produced a run in the top of the fifth to cut the deficit to 4-3.
The Wolf Pack answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning when Chris Dickerson drew a bases-loaded walk and Gillies scored on a fielding error by Wilson at shortstop.
Nevada maintained the three-run difference with single runs in the seventh and eighth, offsetting UH runs in the eighth and ninth innings.
"They took care of the baseball and made plays. We didn't," said UH acting head coach Carl Furutani.
The Rainbows committed five errors, including two in the outfield, one each by Nate Jackson and Chad Boudon.
Furutani thought Yamashita pitched well despite his woes every other inning.
"I felt part of the problem, and I'm not making excuses, was the altitude," Furutani said. "Sean made some great pitches with his breaking ball, but then he would throw the same pitch and it would stay up and over the plate. The dry air makes it difficult to grip the ball when you're not accustomed to that.
"Even when they had the lead, we always had an opportunity to make things happen. I'm not ashamed of the effort we gave in this series."
The final play of the game summed up the weekend for the Rainbows. They had a run in, Matt Purtell on first base with two outs and the heart of the batting order coming up.
Nevada reliever Jason Mackintosh came on to face Omori, UH's best hitter. Omori saw a fat pitch on Mackintosh's first offering, ripped a line drive toward center field. But Mackintosh stuck his glove out and caught the ball.
SAN JOSE, Calif. >> The University of Hawaii-Hilo Vulcans managed just two hits in each game as the San Jose State Spartans swept a WAC doubleheader, 10-0 and 16-0, yesterday. Spartans blank Vulcans
The Vulcans (5-39, 3-27 WAC) have lost 14 consecutive games.
Andy Cook, in the opener, and Jahsean George, in the nightcap, pitched complete games for the Spartans (30-20-1, 17-13), who swept the five-game series.
Both games were called after seven innings by mutual agreement of the coaches.
