From staff and wire reports

RENO, Nevada >> The fickle winds that blow across William Peccole Park shifted just before the first pitch, and the University of Nevada Wolf Pack batters made good use of the favorable currents.

Nevada hit for the cycle in the first inning to take a 4-0 lead and increased the margin to 11-3 after six innings en route to a 12-7 Western Athletic Conference triumph over the University of Hawaii Rainbows yesterday.

"Before the game, the wind was blowing in, then it started blowing out and Chad (Giannetti) was up in the zone a bit," UH acting head coach Carl Furutani said.

Nevada's first hitter, Michael Hass, sent Giannetti's second pitch over the 20-foot-high center-field wall, 400 feet from home plate. Matt Maguire singled and scored on a double to right-center by Mike Gillies. JaRell McIntyre tripled to right to score Gillies and came home on Chris Dickerson's ground out.

The Rainbows (23-26, 10-19 WAC) didn't get a man on base against freshman right-hander Mateo Miramontes until Chad Boudon started the third inning with a single to left. He took third on Lane Nogawa's double and scored on a wild pitch. Nogawa scored on an infield single by Nate Jackson, who later came home on a throwing error at third base by Gillies. That cut the Wolf Pack's (28-23, 16-16 WAC) lead to 5-3.

But, Christian Popoff's leadoff double in the fourth ended Giannetti's day. The Wolf Pack made good use of three walks issued by reliever Aaron Pribble combined with singles by Bo Bryant and McIntyre to score four runs in the fourth.

"Aaron went after guys, but missed, missed, missed and couldn't get the ball down (in the strike zone)," Furutani said. "With the wind, you have a small margin of error.

The Hawaii bats were silent in the middle four innings but awoke briefly in the eighth when Matt Purtell doubled home Jackson, and Patrick Scalabrini homered to left.
