Sometimes Milia Macfarlane surprises even herself.

The senior guard shook off some pregame jitters to hit all six of her 3-point attempts and lead Punahou to the Interscholastic League of Honolulu girls' basketball championship with a 51-47 victory over Kamehameha last night at Iolani gym.

Macfarlane, who had a hard time hitting the rim in warmups, burned up the nets once the ball was tipped, as she nailed four 3-pointers in the first half and two more during a key stretch in the final period.

"I was completely bricking," Macfarlane said of her pregame shooting. "I think I had a couple of airballs. Maybe that was the jitters getting out."

With the win, Punahou not only avenged its only loss of the season, but also earned the ILH's automatic berth in the Hawaii High School Athletic Association tournament.

Kamehameha now has a week to regroup for the league's second-place tournament. The Warriors are the tournament's top seed and draw a bye in the first round. They will face the winner of Tuesday's game between Maryknoll and University High on Thursday.

Punahou coach Shelly Fey is more than happy to avoid playing in the second-place tournament.

"In the ILH you never know what's going to happen," Fey said. "When you go into that tournament you know everybody is gearing up. It's a championship game every time you get in there. So to be able to sit out of that is a little bit of relief."

Macfarlane finished with a game-high 23 points on 7-for-15 shooting and came up with five steals. She also benefited from the Warriors' insistence on keeping Punahou center Becky Hogue in check. With Kamehameha clogging the post, Macfarlane was free to roam the perimeter and knock down open jumpers.

Punahou's Caroline Ane, Misha Lam and Nicole Jones celebrated
the Buffanblu's 51-47 win over Kamehameha last night.

"They got Milia open, and frankly I thought we didn't do a good job playing her," said Kamehameha coach Clay Cockett. "We allowed her to get open to some degree, but they did a great job getting her open."

Hogue, who scored 23 points in the teams' first two meetings, finished with six points, but she grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.

"I knew I wasn't going to get my points, but I was going to battle as hard as I could," Hogue said.

Punahou established the tempo of the game in the first quarter with stifling full-court pressure. The Buffanblu opened up a 19-9 lead early in the second quarter on two treys by Macfarlane. But the Warriors rallied to trim the deficit to four points at halftime. The Buffanblu maintained a slim lead throughout the third quarter, but the Warriors finally caught them with 5:22 remaining in the game when Megan Ching's jumper tied the game at 41.

After a slow start, Ching heated up to score 10 of her team-high 16 points in the second half. Tai Soo added 14 for Kamehameha.

"They were unstoppable," Macfarlane said of the Warriors. "No matter how good our help-side defense was they always seemed to kill us. That kind of team never dies. It actually is an honor to play them, because they make us so much better."

With the game tied at 43, Macfarlane drilled her fifth 3-pointer of the night to put Punahou ahead. Kamehameha's Ashley Ruff promptly hit a jump shot to close the gap, but Macfarlane responded with another long-distance dagger with 3:44 left to give Punahou some breathing room.

"That's her signature," Fey said. "When she doesn't get them she does put the ball on the floor and try to create things, but that's her signature, she loves to shoot those 3's."

Macfarlane and Hogue agreed that Punahou's loss to Kamehameha in the regular season finale Friday inspired the Buffanblu in their preparation for the title contest.

"It propelled us to this victory," Hogue said. "Because of the loss, we refocused and we reevaluated ourselves. We knew our strengths and weakness and came together as a team."
