Canoe relay race Sunday
Some 200 paddlers from Hawaii, Australia, Canada, Tahiti and the mainland U.S. are expected to compete in Sunday's Island Snow Ka'iwi Channel Relay Team Outrigger Canoe Race.The world championships for open ocean team racing begin at 8 a.m. off the Kaluakoi Hotel on Molokai. The first paddlers are expected to cross the finish line at the Ala Wai Harbor entrance next to Magic Island around 1:30 p.m.
Competition is in men's and women's one- and two-person outrigger canoes. The defending champions are Karel Tresnak Jr. and Kai Bartlett in the men's division and Maile Chong and Donna Kahakui in the women's.
Carlyle on all-WAC team
University of Hawaii golfer Scott Carlyle was named to the all-Western Athletic Conference second team yesterday.The sophomore, who tied for 19th place at this past week's WAC Championships, was the only Rainbow selected.
UH top seed in water polo
The University of Hawaii women's water polo team is seeded first at the inaugural National Collegiate Select Championships hosted by the University of the Pacific.The Wahine opened pool play today against UC Irvine. Tomorrow, Hawaii takes on Pacific and UC Santa Barbara.
The eight-team event concludes Sunday.
Help for Special Olympics
Special Olympics Hawaii needs volunteers to help with its Summer Games, May 25-27.Opening ceremonies and softball competition will be held at the University of Hawaii. Aquatics, track and field and powerlifting will be held at Kaiser High School.
