Spartans rout Vulcans

Host San Jose State scored 14 runs in the final three innings to defeat the University of Hawaii -Hilo, 17-2, in a Western Athletic Conference baseball game yesterday.

The game was called after seven innings by mutual agreement of the head coaches.

The Vulcans (5-35, 3-23 WAC) trailed by just a run, 3-2, after Nalei Sooto's two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning.

But, the Spartans (26-20-1, 13-13 WAC) scored five runs in the fifth and nine in the seventh.

Abubo wins surf title

Megan Abubo, No. 2 in the Association of Surfing Professionals' 2000 rankings, clinched the Roxy Fiji Surf Jam title at Cloudbreak, Tavarua, today. The Hawaii surfer scored a convincing victory over Australian Melanie Redman in the final.

Abubo won $10,000 and leads the ASP World Championship Tour ratings.

Hawaii's Rochelle Ballard finished fifth, winning $3,500 in prize money. Ballard moved from 10th into fifth on the world ratings.

Theocharidis, Figueira QB club's April honorees

University of Hawaii volleyball player Costas Theocharidis and Sacred Hearts long jumper Kelly Figueira have been named the Honolulu Quarterback Club's athletes of the month for April.

Theocharidis, a sophomore outside hitter, last week was named Mountain Pacific Sports Federation player of the year. He led the Warriors to the MPSF final.

Figueira, a senior, broke the state record in the girls' long jump Saturday with a leap of 19 feet, 314 inches at the Punahou Relays. She also ran on the Lancers' first-place 4x200-meter relay team.

Theocharidis and Figueira will be honored at Monday's Quarterback Club luncheon at the Pagoda Hotel. Lunch starts at 11:30 a.m., with the program to follow at noon.

HFL football team opens

The semipro Hawaiian Warriors will face the Windward Hawks in the Hawaii Football League's season opener at 7 p.m. Saturday at Kailua High.

The contest is dedicated to the U.S. Armed Forces. A special commemoration of those killed this year will be held prior to kickoff.

UH softball banquet set

The annual awards banquet for the University of Hawaii softball team is scheduled for 5 p.m. Sunday at All-Star Hawaii in Waikiki.
