McKinley High School girls basketball coach Jesse Victorino expected a good game last night, but even Victorino didn't know how good a game it would be.

In their first game back since the teachers' strike ended, Moanalua battled McKinley through double overtime before defeating the Tigers, 57-50, in an Oahu Interscholastic Association contest at Moanalua.

Patti Hardimon led the Menehunes with 19 points, including four free throws at the end of the first overtime to force a second extra period.

"It was pretty tiring, but we pulled through. We gave it our all," Hardimon said. "We didn't feel that rusty. We were prepared. It felt really good (to be back out on the court). I was afraid they weren't going to let us play the rest of our games."

Menehunes coach Roy Dias said his team overcame a sluggish start for the win.

"That game could have gone either way," Dias said. "We were just lucky that we got the win. I knew we were in for a battle."

Sophomore Amber Lee scored 20 points, all on field goals, while freshman Chantal Yadao knocked in 15 points, all 3-pointers, for the Tigers.

"We knew it would be close," Victorino said. "We looked good. It's been the same most of the season. We get rattled because our guards are so young.

"We did okay. We played for 39 minutes, you got to play for 40 in double overtime."

The Tigers were without leading scorer Traci Torralva, who went down with a season-ending ankle injury in the final game before the strike halted the season.
