victory of the season

SACRAMENTO, Calif. >> The University of Hawaii baseball players appreciated having a real bed to sleep in last night.

After an overnight flight to California, a bus trip to Sacramento and a couple hours laying on the benches in the football locker room at Hornet Stadium, the Rainbows played a nonconference game against Cal State Sacramento yesterday.

For six innings, the Hornets had their way with three UH pitchers, building a 7-0 lead. The last three innings belonged to the Rainbows. They staged their biggest comeback of the season, scoring nine unanswered runs for a 9-7 victory.

That made the continuation of the bus trip to Reno, Nev., a lot more tolerable. Even the UH headquarters in Reno, Harrahs Hotel, kept the buffet line open until the hungry Rainbows arrived.

Hornet starter Marshall Plouffe handcuffed the Rainbows on one hit through six innings -- Danny Kimura's fourth-inning, bad-hop single off the shortstop's chest.

Kimura would get the second UH hit, a line single to right, to start the four-run seventh inning.

Brian Bock hit into a fielder's choice, Chad Boudon walked and Cortland Wilson was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Arthur Guillen then lined a 1-2 pitch to left-center field for a double, scoring Bock and Boudon. Nate Jackson beat out an infield hit to score Wilson, and Guillen scored when Jackson was caught in a rundown between first and second.

Gregg Omori, Kimura and Bock singled with one out in the eighth to account for one run. With two out, Lane Nogawa and Wilson singled in Patrick Scalabrini, running for Kimura and Bock, respectively, tying the score at 7.

Jackson started the UH ninth by beating out an infield hit to short, but was forced at second on Matt Purtell's sacrifice bunt attempt. Omori drilled a one-strike pitch to right-center field for a double with Purtell moving to third.

Scalabrini, who has not started the last two games due to a strained left wrist, whacked a two-ball pitch off the center-field wall to easily score both baserunners.

Lee hit Aurelio Jackson to start the bottom of the ninth, but retired Cory Williams on a short fly that Boudon snared with a sliding catch near the left-field line. Carlos Morales then hit into a game-ending double play.
