The act allows illegal immigrants to apply for visas without first returning to their home country to apply from there. Most illegal immigrants who leave the country are not allowed back.
A visa allows the immigrant to stay in the country and makes it easier for the immigrant to apply for a green card or permanent residency.
The immigration office at the airport will be open until midnight tonight, according to Immigration and Naturalization Services regional director Donald Radcliffe.
The INS main office will be open for regular business hours. Radcliffe said last week that his office had been getting 10 visa applications per day, about double the normal amount. Visa applicants must be sponsored and have a close relative who is a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
