Businesses employing deadbeat parents may be excluded from obtaining city contracts under a law proposed by Councilman Andy Mirikitani. Bill targets businesses
that hire deadbeat parentsStar-Bulletin staff
The law would single out parents who are delinquent in meeting child support obligations, building on a federal law that mandates states to maintain a computerized database to track deadbeat parents.
The bill would require city contractors and their subcontractors to establish policies relating to child support and paternity obligations of certain employees.
It would prohibit employees who are seriously delinquent in meeting child support obligations from being used on city contracts for a period of three months or more.
The city's executive branch would be precluded from hiring such an individual for any appointee position.
"City taxpayer funds should not be used to support businesses with people who are blatantly failing to meet their child support obligations to provide for the educational and living needs of their children," Mirikitani said.
