Governor honors Hawaii volunteers

Gov. Ben Cayetano honored 24 individuals, businesses and organizations at the Kilohana Awards Program for Outstanding Volunteerism yesterday.

There were 182 nominations in five categories. The winners were:

Youth: Edmar Ramos of Oahu, Shealen Uaiwa of Maui, Ben Miller of Kauai and Candace S.W.M. Seu of Hawaii

Adult: Karen Sumida of Oahu, Rachel Porter of Maui, Brian Yamase of Kauai, and Nashtene McShane of Hawaii

Senior: Albert Minn of Oahu, Beverly Peck of Maui, Edward Kawamura of Kauai, and Edwin Bonsey of Hawaii

Business: Hilton Hawaiian Village, Maui Scrap Metal Co., Hyatt Regency Kauai Resort & Spa and The Princeville Hotel on Kauai, and Fair Wind Inc. on the Big Island

Project: New Life Body of Christ Christian Church Community Activities on Oahu, Kula Hospital Auxiliary Blanch Johnson Memorial Garden on Maui, Lanai City Lions Club, Ke Ola Pono No Na Ka Kupuna of Alu Like, Inc. on Molokai, Adopt-A-Cop Project on Kauai, and Lehua Jaycees and the Waiakea Lions on the Big Island.

Vandals: The return to school at Kaelepulu Elementary School in Kailua is marred by joy-riding vandals who use a golf cart to run over plants in the school courtyard and the sprinkler system, causing $1,500 damage.

Law enforcement reins in marijuana on Big Island

HILO >> Law enforcement officers confiscated 3,736 marijuana plants ranging in height from seedlings to five feet tall during a five-day operation that ended Friday on the Big Island.

Big Island police were joined by personnel from the Honolulu Police Department, State Department of Land and Natural Resources, Hawaii Army National Guard and U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency.

The sweep -- part of the continuing "Counter-Cannabis Field Operation" -- covered areas of the Hamakua, North Hilo, South Hilo, Puna and Kona Districts,

No unusual incidents were reported, no arrests were made and no booby traps were found, police said.

Assault, burglary charges filed in Hawi case

HILO >> Sexual assault, burglary and terroristic threatening charges were filed against a 19-year-old man in connection with a burglary November 28 in Hawi, North Kohala.

Ezra Bob Kamauokalani Mahu, formerly of Hawi, is being held on $140,000 bail after charges were filed Friday. He had been on supervised release after being charged in an earlier burglary that took place on November 11, in Kapaau, North Kohala.

Farm worker arrested in blaze at Aloun Farms

A farm worker was arrested for setting fire to a trailer on Aloun Farms in Kapolei where a coworker lived, police said.

Other workers who live on the farm said they smelled smoke and said found the suspect attempting to set the trailer on fire at about 3:30 a.m. Friday. Police say the suspect told co-workers that voices told him to burn the trailer.

Damage was estimated at $2,000. No one was injured.

Boy robbed after hiding money in underwear

Three teenagers robbed a 13-year-old boy who tried to hide his money in his underwear, police said.

Police say three suspects demanded money from the victim near Paliuli Street and Kapahulu Avenue at 6 p.m. Friday. The victim gave them 50 cents and hid $25 in his shorts because he thought the suspects were still in the area, he told police.

Police said the three suspects confronted the boy again and one suspect grabbed him and removed the hidden money. Another boy pulled out a knife and told the boy to leave, police said.

The suspects had not been arrested as of yesterday afternoon.
