Hawaii Pacific University students celebrated their heritage with music, exhibits and a parade April 20 along Fort Street Mall. One hundred twenty-four flags lined a staging area on Fort Street Mall.

Students dressed in the traditional attire of their homelands shared dances and spoke about their national customs. They were also encouraged to mingleand learn about the cultures of their fellow classmates.

Cash prizes were awarded to clubs in four categories. The Universal African Club won awards in the parade, exhibit and overall categories; the Japan Club won an award for its performance.

The annual event was started 17 years ago by psychology professor Howard Markowitz who at the time was the international student advisor. He wanted to create an event that would promote intercultural awareness.
