JEFF COLEMAN pitched one-hit ball for eight innings and Danny Kimura knocked in three runs as the University of Hawaii defeated Oregon State, 7-3, in a non-conference baseball game at Rainbow Stadium last night.

Coleman struck out eight, walked four and hit a batter, but the only hit he surrendered was a line single to left by Brian Barden in the fourth inning.

UH The junior right-hander threw 112 pitches, quite a contrast to the two road games in Texas, where he threw 148 and 141 pitches. He improved his record to 6-5.

Lane Nogawa and Gregg Omori each had three hits. The Rainbows collected 13 hits off Oregon State starter Stephen Copeland.

The Rainbows jumped on Copeland early, notching two first-innning runs. Arthur Guillen walked on four pitches and moved to second on Matt Purtell's single to left.

The runners then advanced a base on a wild pitch. Copeland almost escaped trouble when he struck out Omori and Patrick Scalabrini. But Kimura hit a soft liner to left to score both runners.

The Beavers got one run back in the fourth when Coleman walked lead-off batter Eric Stark. Coleman compounded things when his throw pulled Kimura off first base on Bryan Ingram's sacrifice bunt. Barden followed with a single to left, scoring Stark.

Coleman, after the runners moved up on a passed ball, retired the next three batters on a pop to third, a grounder to short and a fly to center to end the threat.

The Rainbows gave Coleman more breathing room with a four-run fifth inning that began with singles by Tom Montgomery and Nogawa. Guillen advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt. Montgomery scored and Nogawa stopped at third on Purtell's double to left-center.

With the OSU infield playing in, Omori hit a high hopper over Barden at third base that went for a two-run double. He scored on Kimura's two-out single to center.

The Beavers (27-17) scored twice in the ninth off reliever Aaron Pribble.

Barden greeted Pribble with a home run over the center-field wall.

The Rainbows (21-23) and Beavers meet in the second game of the series tonight at 6:35.
