Students from 37 high schools statewide will be competing tomorrow in the finals of this year's "Brown Bags to Stardom" youth talent search. Stardom in the bag
Finalists were determined by performances held in the respective schools.
The competition, now in its 21st year, is a popular showcase for Hawaii's future stars. Previous competitors who have gone on to successful professional careers include Tia Carrere, Kapena, Glenn Medeiros and Na Leo Pilimehana.
Special appearances will be made by 112, Beenieman, Public Announcement, Ashley Ballard, AZ, Koa 'Uka and Ten Feet.
"Brown Bags to Stardom" takes place at the Waikiki Shell tomorrow, starting at 4 in the afternoon. Tickets prices range from $9.40 to $25. For more information, call radio station I-94 at 296-9494.
Panel discusses Makua Valley
There will be a live panel discussion on military use of Makua Valley 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today on 'Olelo Community Television NATV Channel 53.The program will also be simulcast on the 'Olelo Web site www.olelo.org.
The discussion will cover the historical and cultural significance of the valley, the health implications of the unexploded ordnance and hazardous materials in the valley and what steps should be taken.
Panel members will include William Aila Jr., a fisherman and Hawaiian homesteader; Momi Kamahele, an administrator for the Hawaiian Studies program at the University of Hawaii; retired UH professor Marion Kelly; and Sparky Rodrigues, a member of Malama Makua.
