Hawaiian Air
reschedules Samoa flight

Associated Press

PAGO PAGO, American Samoa >> Hawaiian Airlines' Friday flight from Hawaii was scheduled to arrive at Pago Pago International Airport this afternoon instead of its regular night arrival because of a partial shutdown of the airport's instrumental landing system, an airline spokesman said.

Today's flight was to arrive at 3:55 p.m. and depart for Honolulu at 5:15 p.m., spokesman Keoni Wagner said. The airline's flight on Monday had been similarly rescheduled.

The Federal Aviation Administration ordered the partial shutdown of the instrumental landing system because of a runway extension construction project that started several weeks ago.

The navigational system is still operating, except for the glideslope, an instrument that provides vertical guidance. It was shut down to prevent it from being damaged during excavation work for the runway extension, FAA regional director Smitty Lutu said last week.

Hawaiian's flights to American Samoa, a U.S. territory 2,300 miles south of Hawaii, will be scheduled on a "flight-by-flight basis for the moment," Wagner said.

Hawaiian Airlines' two weekly flights will continued to arrive during daylight until mid-May, when a temporary navigational aid is installed, airline staff in American Samoa said.
