[HAWAII GOLF]
Stubblefield Larry Stubblefield and Keith Kollmeyer were in the same foursome, rode in the same golf cart and almost shot the same score yesterday to emerge as the top two professionals entering today's final round of the 38th annual Mid-Pacific Open.

Kollmeyer, Nishimoto and
Nakama round out the
final foursomeBy Paul Arnett
Star-BulletinStubblefield's 68 and Kollmeyer's 69 dropped them to 5-under and 3-under in a tournament each of them has won before. Joining them in the final foursome are Dan Nishimoto and Casey Nakama.
Nishimoto is 2-under for the tourney after shooting an unhealthy 75 during yesterday's third round. Nakama is another shot back at 215 after he carded a 73. It's likely one of these golfers will walk off the course this afternoon as Mid-Pac champion.
"Keith and I had a lot of fun out there today," Stubblefield said. "I've putted the ball well the last couple of days and I was really pleased with my iron play. I'm just a once-a-week golfer these days, so I'm a little surprised at how well I'm playing."
Stubblefield won this event in 1972, before embarking on a three-year journey on the PGA Tour. These days, he has his own insurance company and is raising young kids, which doesn't leave much time for golf.
"It kind of showed on Thursday when I opened with a 74," said Stubblefield, who is 7-under since.
Kollmeyer made the turn at even-par, but was 3-under on his back nine.
The 1998 Mid-Pac champion shot a 73 the first 18 holes, but finished 4-under the next two days. He said he had no indication coming into the tourney that he would play this well.
"I was playing pretty average golf," Kollmeyer said. "I don't play golf that much anymore. It feels great to be near the top. Hopefully, I can come out tomorrow and shoot well. It was a lot of fun playing with Larry."
Fun was not had by all in today's final foursome, which will include Nishimoto and Nakama. Nakama, who finished second last year, had another so-so round but remains in contention. Nishimoto led the first two rounds but found that lead slipping away yesterday. Had he shot even-par the Kauai resident would be tied with Stubblefield for the lead.
"Our group kind of struggled," said Nakama. The other two were Keith Hayashi (77) and eight-time Mid-Pac champ Lance Suzuki (76). "We knew Larry was shooting well in front of us. Conditions were good. I'm just not scoring right now."'
The final two groups will tee it up around 9 a.m. today. Winners will be crowned in the championship, A and B flights as well.
