Baugh baffles Rainbows

HOUSTON >> Kenny Baugh needs the fingers on both hands to count the All-America teams he's been named to the past two seasons.

His performance against the University of Hawaii Rainbows solidified his chances of being a first-round pick in the June amateur free-agent draft according to Hawaii acting head coach Carl Furutani.

Baugh gave up one hit -- Patrick Scalabrini's slow roller that just got past the mound in the second inning. The 6-foot-4 right-hander struck out 11, walked no one and faced the minimum 27 batters.

Austin Davis' home run to left field on Sean Yamashita's first pitch gave the Rice University Owls and Baugh the necessary offense in the 10-0 Western Athletic Conference victory.

Baugh immediately picked Scalabrini off first. The only other Rainbow to reach base was pinch hitter Aaron Pribble, who was hit by a pitch in the ninth. Lane Nogawa followed with a game-ending double-play ball.

"It was an outstanding performance. He was throwing in the mid-90s, had a great breaking ball and a great change-up," said Furutani "There are some losses that hurt, like at TCU, but tonight's doesn't hurt as much when you see someone so much in command."

The Rainbows did not get a ball out of the infield the entire game. They had 11 outs on ground balls, three pop-ups and Matt Purtell's line drive out to first baseman Jesse Roman.

"In all my years, I haven't seen a pitcher with so much control. I couldn't believe the game went so quickly and I couldn't believe what Baugh was doing. You have to give him credit," Furutani said.

With the way Baugh was pitching, the outcome was academic after the Owls scored four runs in the third inning, aided by two errors on Mike Lorsbach's two-out fly ball to right field.

The series concludes with a morning game today.
