Smith sets UH record
in 10,000-meter run

Junior Cheryl Smith set a new University of Hawaii school record yesterday in the 10,000-meter race at the Mt. San Antonio College Relays in Walnut, Calif.

Smith finished second in the race with a time of 34:26 seconds. The old mark was 35:10.8, set by Karen Curtis at the 1983 Mt. SAC Relays.

The rest of the Wahine team were at the Pomona-Pitzer Relays yesterday in Claremont, Calif., where sophomore Casey McGuire-Turcott finished second in two events.

McGuire-Turcott was the runner-up in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4 minutes, 34.62 seconds, two seconds behind Calgary's Jeanette Collins. In the 3,000 meters, McGuire-Turcott finished in 10:14.24; Boston's Jennifer Kehoe won in 10:07.09.

The only other Wahine medalist was Nicole Kaffka, who placed third in the triple jump.

The competition at the Mt. SAC Relays today and tomorrow.

Biathlon/relay tomorrow

The 9th Natatorium Biathlon/Relay is scheduled for 7 a.m. tomorrow in Waikiki.

The course is a 2.5-mile run around Kapiolani Park followed by an 800-meter swim off San Souci Beach. The event is open to individuals and relay teams.

Komine triumphs again

All-America right-hander Shane Komine struck out 10 in eight innings yesterday to help Nebraska to a 9-0 win over host Kansas.

Komine, a Kalani High graduate, scattered seven hits and walked only one to improve to 9-1 on the season.

Hawaii's own

Benny Agbayani, Mets: The St. Louis School and Hawaii Pacific University alumnus began a rehab stint with Triple-A Norfolk yesterday and is expected to be activated Tuesday. He went on the disabled list April 9 with a broken bone in his wrist.

Mike Fetters, Dodgers: The Iolani School graduate pitched the eighth inning in a 3-1 win over the Padres last night. He retired all three San Diego batters he faced, two of them on strikeouts, and was credited with his third hold of the season. Relief pitchers are credited with a hold when they enter a game in a save situation and leave the game with that same save situation intact.

Chris Truby, Astros: The Damien Memorial High School product went 0-for-4 yesterday in a win over the Cardinals, including two strikeouts. He drove in a run in the third inning with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly. He also stranded four runners, three of them in scoring position.
