Star-BulletinThe free lunch program was quickly organized yesterday after Queen Liliuokalani Trust staff members told Mayor Jeremy Harris children are going hungry since they aren't getting school lunches because of the teachers strike, said city spokeswoman Carol Costa.
The federally funded school lunch program provides the main meal for many children, she said.
Food will be provided from 11 a.m. to noon at Nanakuli Community Park, Waianae District Park, Papakolea Community Park, Kalihi Valley Park, Waipahu District Park and Waimanalo District Park.
"We'll take it one day at a time," Costa said. "We're still hopeful the strike will end itself this weekend."
She said the areas chosen for the lunches normally receive free hot lunches through the city's Summer Fun Program.
About 2,200 to 2,500 kids were expected to show up today at the six sites, she said.
Park staff also are talking to the kids about the Summer Fun Program and doing some early registration, Costa said. Registration for the popular program formally begins May 12.
