The college crowd flocks to Bedroq Bar and Grill,
perfect for their budget and a good workout on the
dance floor. Thursday's the best night.

Night on the cheap

Have a blast without going bust

In the words of those cheerful hip-hoppers Black Eyed Peas, "Jumpin' music, swifty day, smoke machines and ... look out weekend, cuz here I come." And in the words of the '80s hair band Loverboy, "Everybody's workin' for the weekend!"

Whatever your demographic, money's tight these days. Here are some clubs where you may be able to make it through the night on less than $20 per person.

On Thursdays, the place to be is Bedroq Bar and Grill at 2535 Coyne St. across the street from Puck's Alley and next to Bubbies Ice Cream. Follow the crowd and the lights. You can't miss it. It's 18 and over, so the crowd is a little younger than at most clubs, but drinks are cheap. Long Island iced teas are $2 each and pitchers of beer range from $5 to $7, depending on what you're drinking.

Things don't start to pick up until almost midnight. The crowd gets thick and the music resonates upstairs and downstairs. The ground-floor dance floor is tiny, and DJ Cool E keeps it crowded. It's shoulder to shoulder and butt to butt.

There's only one fan to cool you off, so if you're planning to dance, wear as little as legally possible.

DJ Grant Fukuda, above, spins at Brew Moon Sundays.

Upstairs, there are pool tables, dartboards, lanai seating and another bar. The crowd ranges from college students to military men.

Cover is $3 for 21 and older. Call 942-8822.

Friday night, Magoo's at 1015 University Ave., across the street from Bedroq and next to Eastside Grill, is the place to find the university crowd. There's no cover charge and no age limitations.

Pitchers of beer are $5 each and with $1 margaritas, you can't go wrong. Magoo's basically serves two things: beer and pizza. OK, they do serve other things, but with their extensive draft selection, the crowd usually isn't there for food.

There is no dance floor , but there is a jukebox that'll take your spare change to play anything from Bob Marley to the Eagles.

If you're looking for a place that's mellow, Magoo's is it. Call 949-5381.

On Saturday, make the long drive to the North Shore, then hang out 'til 5 p.m. when Reggae Church plays soulful reggae at Taste of Paradise "surf" restaurant, at 59-254 Kamehameha Highway. The party starts at 5 p.m. and usually lasts until about 7 p.m.

Taste of Paradise doesn't serve alcohol, but the food is awesome and reasonably priced. Try the Brazilian-style plate lunch for $6.98.

Patrons at Bedroq enjoy loud and lively conversation
over dance music and a few beers.

The crowd is small and ranges from local surfers off the beach to tourists just out of the hot sun.

For directions, call them at 348-5886.

Brew Moon's "Dark Side of the Moon" in Ward Centre is the only place to be Sunday nights. It's not the place itself; it's not even the mix of people who go -- it's the music. DJ Grant Fukuda knows what people like -- getting just about everyone on the dance floor by playing everything from retro Michael Jackson to the girlie band Dream, and of course, Black Eyed Peas.

The dance floor doesn't stop moving, but gets more crowded as the night progresses. Brew Moon also has outside seating on the lanai for those of you who want to steer clear of flailing arms and thrusting hips.

Brew Moon is not cheap, but it's doable for under $20. The cover is $5 and drinks are $5.50 each, with cups of beer going for $3. Brew Moon closes at 2 am.

Call 593-0088.

Then on Monday night, Auntie Pasto's at 559 Kapahulu Ave., is transformed from pasta restaurant to dance club. The cover is $5 for 21 and over only. Drinks are $4 and beer runs $4 to $5.

Early crowds have been weak, but this place has the potential to be very cool once the sound system is working properly.

The cover is $5 for 21 and over. Call 739-2426.

So grab your friends, pool your money and try something new without breaking your bank.
