Behind 3-0 early and 4-1 after seven innings, the Rainbows rallied for three runs in the eighth inning and another in the ninth to take a 5-4 lead.
But with two out in the bottom of the ninth, the Horned Frogs (25-17, 15-8 Western Athletic Conference) turned a walk to Terry Trofholz, Erick Macha's run-scoring double and a single up the middle by Tom Bates into a 6-5 WAC win.
"I don't know what to say," Hawaii acting head baseball coach Carl Furutani said. "It's frustrating. We made some things happen at the end, but we couldn't hold them."
The Rainbows (18-22, 8-16) drew even at 4 in the eighth on Danny Kimura's two-run double and Kevin Gilbride's single to right-center field that scored pinch runner Cortland Wilson.
Hawaii took its only lead of the game in the ninth. Arthur Guillen drew a one-out walk, advanced to second when Matt Purtell grounded out and scored on Lane Nogawa's single up the middle.
Right-hander Wakon Childers, who slept on his arm and needed treatment for stiffness prior to the game, started for UH and lasted two innings before the stiffness returned.
"You know Wakon. He's going to go out there and battle," Furutani said. "I think he kind of set the tone today."
Right-hander Chad Giannetti came on in the third inning and pitched well until the two-out walk to Trofholz in the ninth. That called for a mound visit by Furutani.
"We talked about what he needed to do. I told Chad I would give him one more batter. It didn't work out," Furutani said.
After Macha's RBI double tied the score, Furutani brought in left-hander Aaron Pribble to face the left-handed Bates.
That didn't work out either.
The Rainbows, who lost two of three games to Texas Christian, travel to Houston today and open a three-game series Thursday with Rice, ranked No. 4 by Baseball America.
'Bow bunts:
Freshman right fielder Tim Montgomery has struck out 49 times erasing the single-season record of 46 set by John Matias in 1989.The Rainbow pitching staff has just two complete games this season, by Jeff Coleman and Sean Yamashita.
Matthew Purtell and Patrick Scalabrini are one, two in the WAC with 17 and 15 stolen bases, respectively.
Moving the fence in at Rainbow Stadium has resulted in different numbers in the three extra-base categories. The Rainbows hit 75 doubles in 2000. They have 79 all ready this season. They had 20 triples a year ago, but only have four this year. They hit eight home runs last year, all on the road, but have 23 this year.
