Star-Bulletin staff

The University of Hawaii softball team managed "only" a split at Pacific and Fresno State last week, but the Wahine swept the Western Athletic Conference individual awards for the week.

Junior second baseman Natalie Gonzales batted .526 and achieved a .632 on-base percentage in a six-game road trip that included a doubleheader against Pacific in her hometown of Stockton, Calif.

Senior left-hander Desiree Duran pitched shutouts (including a one-hitter) against Fresno State on consecutive days, as Hawaii got its first victories ever at FSU. With another complete game win at Pacific, and Duran was 3-0 on the trip, limiting opponents to a .129 batting average.

Gonzales was named WAC Player of the Week and Duran was honored as WAC Pitcher of the Week.

Gonzales is tied for the conference lead in hits (55) and triples (3).

Hawaii, a half-game behind first-place Fresno State in the WAC standings, hosts Portland State in conference doubleheaders Friday and Saturday.

Vega honored:

Nancy Vega, Hawaii-Hilo's freshman shortstop from Mililani, is the Pacific West Conference co-Player of the Week. Vega led Hilo to three wins in four games against Hawaii Pacific last week.

Vega went 5 for 12 with a three-run homer.

Jodie Rock of Western Washington, who went 9 for 16 with five RBIs, was also honored.

BYUH sweeps:

Brigham Young-Hawaii swept a Pacific West doubleheader from Chaminade yesterday, 2-1 and 4-3, at the BYUH field.

The Seasiders won the first game in the bottom of the 10th when Marie Maese doubled to deep right-center with two outs to score Maggie Reynolds.

In the second game, Chaminade rallied with three runs in the top of the seventh to close to 4-3, but BYUH hung on for the win.
