Rainbows’
miscues
lead to loss

Hawaii commits 4 errors in
1-run loss to Texas Christian

Staff & wire reports

FORT WORTH, Texas >> The University of Hawaii kept presenting Texas Christian with gifts yesterday.

The Horned Frogs finally turned them into a victory with a four-run eighth inning.

The 5-4 TCU win evened the Western Athletic Conference series at one victory apiece. The finale was scheduled for 9:15 this morning.

The Rainbows were guilty of four physical errors, could have been charged with a couple more on fly balls to the outfield that weren't caught and had mental miscues.

"When you give them seven more outs, that is hard to overcome," Hawaii acting head coach Carl Furutani said.

Patrick Scalabrini's clutch two-out single to left put Hawaii ahead, 2-0, in the top of the third inning.

With the wind blowing out to right field, Rainbow starter Sean Yamashita did a fine job of getting the Horned Frogs to hit the ball on the ground for much of the game.

Erick Macha's looping fly ball down the right-field line was scored a triple when the ball popped out of Tim Montgomery's glove after a long run. On Tom Bates' bouncer back to the mound, Macha was caught in a rundown only to have UH catcher Jacob Flick drop the ball. Macha scored a gift run on Walter Olmstead's groundout.

Shortstop Lane Nogawa made a pair of mistakes in the field, but neither of them hurt the 'Bows. Nogawa's fielding error in the second was atoned for when Yamashita got Tom Price to hit a fielder's choice grounder to end the inning. Yamashita bailed Nogawa out again in the seventh when he got two ground-ball outs to strand a Horned Frog who reached when Nogawa dropped a double-play ball.

But Gregg Omori's fielding error on Rudy Rivera's one-out grounder opened the door for TCU in the eighth inning. Rivera advance to second on a wild pitch and tied the score at 2 on Macha's single to right.

Macha continued to second when Montgomery's throw home missed the cutoff man. He then scored the go-ahead run on Bates' ground single up the middle.

A balk by reliever Bryan Lee led to another TCU run.

"We didn't take care of the baseball, but they didn't hang their heads," Furutani said. "We got ground balls for double plays we turned and one we didn't. You can't overlook the plays we made behind Sean. It was hard to come back, but we almost did."

Flick and pinch hitter Brian Bock singled to start the ninth inning. Aaron Pribble's pinch single scored Flick and sent pinch runner Nate Jackson to third. Jackson scored and pinch runner Arthur Guillen took second on a wild pitch, but TCU closer Stan Newton struck out Matt Purtell looking and Cortland Wilson swinging to end the game.

"The players feel bad about it, but like I told them, the game is over with, just start thinking about tomorrow and come back and get it done. Just focus on winning the series," Furutani said.

"The thing I like about these kids is they won't give up. Sure, we want to win every game. But they will be successful in life. When you look at the bigger picture, that's what it is all about."
